Year of Muybridge

The banner for Year of Muybridge featuring a photograph of Muybridge

Year of Muybridge is a year long programme of activities to celebrate the 190th birthday of pioneering photographer and inventor Eadweard Muybridge. Year of Muybridge is supported by Kingston Council, Friends of Kingston Museum and Kingston University.

Due to COVID-19 (Coronavirus) the planned programme has changed somewhat but activity will still be taking place online, and when time allows across Kingston Museum, Kingston University and Kingston Town Centre.

Muybridge left the collection to Kingston Museum when he died in 1904. This is considered to be one of the most important Muybridge collections in the world, due to a distinctive local and personal connection to the photographer himself. Kingston Museum is currently closed but when back open our Muybridge display will be open to view all year round.

Kingston Museum's stored (not currently on display) Muybridge collection will be moving from out of borough storage to Kingston University’s new Town House building. This partnership will make it easier to facilitate access to Kingston Museum's stored Muybridge collection. This work follows on from the council and the university, signing a memorandum of understanding in October 2019.

An inspiring programme of activities will be taking place, including a community led exhibition at Kington Museum and a new Muybridge display at Town House as well as the creation of engaging activities, enabling audiences of all ages to enjoy and learn more about the work of Eadweard Muybridge.
