Become a Lead Brass School
We want brass playing to flourish in Kingston upon Thames.
KMS are offering a progressive project to schools, which builds on learning and ensures students have a pathway to follow, giving all students an opportunity to learn a brass instrument and progress well.
"Lead Brass School" would be expected to:
- Host an assembly for year 3 each summer
- Allow a KMS STARter Group to be taught during school time in a suitable room
- Host a "Brass Club" for students who have completed the STARter Group course
- Host traditional brass lessons in school time as and when students are ready for this
- Be super enthusiastic about music in their school
A brass instrument is an instrument that produces sound by vibration of air in a length of tube produced by the vibration of the player's lips. Slides, valves or keys are used to change the length of tubing, thus changing the available harmonic series, while the player's embouchure, lip tension and air flow select the specific harmonic produced...

Year Zero
Lead Brass Schools hosts a KMS Brass Assembly for all of year 3 (Summer Term):
- KMS will bring 100 pBuzz brass instruments into school to run an interactive assembly with all year 3 students (schools with more than 3 form entry will require two assemblies)
- Students (and staff) will learn some simple pieces with fun backing tracks
- The assembly will be run by KMS brass tutors who will take the year group through the different brass instruments
- The assembly will include a video introduction from Oompah Brass
- A short performance by the KMS Brass Tutor
- Each pupil and teacher is given a pBuzz
- A short video performance by one of the KMS ensembles
- Students will leave the assembly "buzzing" about brass instruments

Things to keep in mind before committing to becoming a Lead Brass School:
As provision grows, the STARter Group, club/ensemble and other brass tuition will need to be in one block on a single day.
In order for club/ensembles to be part of the annual workshop and performance, KMS may require a member of staff to attend to assist.
The project above starts with year 3, it is possible to run an assembly in year 2 for a year 3 start if this suits your school better.
