Children Workshop, ‘The Past and Present in Your Hands’ By Betty Kim

Saturday 5th April 2025

1st session: 10.15-11 am

2nd session: 11.15-12 pm

This workshop is suitable for children aged 7 - 11.

This art workshop, led by illustrator Betty Kim, will offer children an opportunity to express their emotions through oil pastel drawing. They will create artwork while learning how to reflect and connect with their feelings. 

Children should be accompanied by an adult.

She explores the complexities of cultural adaptation and the internal struggles she experienced in a new environment. The performance poignantly captures situations where individuals suppress intense emotions—joy, frustration, and alienation. By bringing these hidden emotions to light, the performance aims to spark a powerful connection with the audience, inviting them to contemplate the unspoken realities of the immigrant experience.

This workshop is suitable for children aged 6 - 11 

The ‘Family Tree’ workshop, led by artist Jeongyeon Kim, invites children to explore and document their family history in creative ways. They are encouraged to reflect on their heritage, share stories, and develop a personalised family tree. This unique workshop will provide an opportunity for children to develop an appreciation of their families. 

Children should be accompanied by an adult.

She is an award-winning Korean/Canadian illustrator and printmaker based in London, UK. With a versatile portfolio that spans editorial illustrations and both fiction and non-fiction books, Choi’s work resonates with audiences of all ages, from children and mid-grades to young adults and adults. Known for her unique style and innovative approach, Choi’s illustrations bring stories to life, captivating readers with their vibrant detail and emotional depth. Her dedication to her craft and her openness to exploring new and exciting projects make her a dynamic force in the art world. 

During this talk, Choi will share insights into her creative process, discuss the inspirations behind her work, and reflect on her journey as an artist. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the art ofillustration and printmaking.

Both events share a common thread of highlighting "female artists," yet due to the differences in eras, countries, and cultures between the UK and Korea, attendees can expect to observe varying perspectives on this theme.
